The Rory Gallagher International Tribute Festival
23 Jun 2025
Each year at the end of May the small town of Ballyshannon, just a 20 minute drive from Black Pig Lodge, transforms into a heaving mass of Rory Gallagher, rock and blues fans. The music festival is four days of non-stop gigs on the streets and in pubs. Over 10,000 music fans attend the festival each year from over 20 countries worldwide. They gather for four days of live performances to experience an amazing line-up of tribute bands and renowned musicians performing Rory’s classics. The town takes on a vibrant, friendly atmosphere and is filled with food stalls, merchandise and fans camping along the streets.

The festival is free!
It is a wonderful tribute and celebration of the life and music of Irish blues-rock legend, Rory Gallagher, who was born in Ballyshannon. He is regarded as Ireland’s first rock star and became well-known for his virtuosic style of guitar playing and live performances. Many musicians from the world of rock and blues cite Gallagher as an influence, including Brian May of ‘Queen’, Johnny Marr of ‘The Smiths’ and Eric Clapton. Jimi Hendrix is said to have described Gallagher as ‘The best singer-guitarist I have ever seen’.
Sadly, Gallagher died prematurely at the age of 47 years due to complications following a liver transplant. But his memory and music live on every year in Ballyshannon.
Paul was lucky enough to perform at the 2025 Rory Gallagher Festival, stepping in at the last minute for the young band ‘Mac 2’ as their drummer. Rory Gallagher classics such as ‘Bullfrog Blues’, ‘Shadow Play’ and ‘Tattooed Lady’ were included in the setlist. Let’s just say he very much enjoyed being on stage, living out his rockstar fantasy!
